Reading a NAAC grade sheet

Accreditation is an opinion about quality, not a licence

NAAC — the National Assessment and Accreditation Council — assesses whole institutions. A peer team visits, the institution submits evidence against a published framework, and the outcome is a score that maps to a letter. That letter is an assessment result. It is not the instrument that permits a university to award degrees; that permission flows from the university's founding statute and UGC recognition, and it exists whether the grade sheet is flattering or not.

So the two documents answer different questions. Recognition answers may this body award degrees. The grade sheet answers how did this institution score against the assessment framework in its last cycle. An admission call that answers the first question with the second has changed the subject, which is worth noticing in real time.

No document in this field gets quoted in advertising more often than the grade, and almost none gets read less often. Reading it takes five minutes once you know what the letters compress.

The bands behind the letters

Each letter is shorthand for a CGPA band. On the scale used across recent accreditation cycles:

Two consequences follow. First, an A sits in the third band from the top, so “A grade — the highest rating” is a misdescription you can catch on the spot. Second, the number outranks the letter: regulators have at times framed eligibility for particular delivery modes in terms of the score itself, so record the CGPA printed on the sheet, not just the letter above it.

What an A actually measures

The assessment covers the institution as a whole across seven criteria: curricular aspects; teaching-learning and evaluation; research, innovations and extension; infrastructure and learning resources; student support and progression; governance, leadership and management; and institutional values and best practices. Weightings vary with the category of institution, and the criterion-level scores sit behind the headline CGPA on the full sheet.

Read that way, an A is a genuinely useful datum: an external team examined the institution against a public framework within a stated window and placed it in the 3.01–3.25 band. That is considerably more than most claims in a prospectus can say for themselves.

Four things it does not measure

1. Your programme. The grade attaches to the institution, not to the MBA you are considering, and not to the distance or online wing that would deliver it.
2. This session's entitlement. Whether a distance degree may be offered in the session you join is a UGC-DEB question. A current grade and a lapsed entitlement can coexist without contradiction.
3. The present. Accreditation runs in cycles with expiry dates. A grade earned in one cycle describes that cycle, not the years after it.
4. Rank. Bands are wide. Two universities holding the same letter can be far apart, and the framework was never designed as a league table.

A worked reading

Swami Vivekanand Subharti University in Meerut carries NAAC A accreditation, and its two-year distance MBA — a dual-specialisation degree awarded by the university, ₹65,000 in total — is the kind of offer where the grade sheet genuinely earns its place in the file. What the grade contributes: the university cleared the 3.01–3.25 band at assessment. What it leaves open: the session entitlement for your own intake, which you confirm on the DEB list, and the identity checks you would run anywhere.
